Loss of Pregnancy Cytogenetics

What is detected?
Cytogenetic testing detects structural and numerical chromosomal abnormalities. The most common chromosome abnormality in early miscarriage is trisomy 16, and is due to an extra chromosome 16.

What is not detected?
Loss of pregnancy cytogenetic testing does not identify all possible inherited disorders and birth defects. There are many genetic disorders that are caused by small changes in chromosomes which cannot be detected by this test. Sometimes the presence of microbes or maternal cells, give a result that may not represent a true finding.

What are the benefits of Cytogenetic Testing?
Testing can help bring about closure for the current loss. It can also have an impact on the management of any future pregnancies.

When will I get my results?
Cytogenetic testing requires cells to grow. It may take between 15 to 20 working days to obtain a cytogenetic test result. Results will be available from your lead maternity caregiver or consultant.
